The solution, at least on my device: When you write the tag (in the Automagic format) you *must* check "include application record." It and another option were both unchecked by default on my device. Now the tag and flow work fine.

I switched to using the not-recommended existing ID. It works.

The application manager does not let me specify a URL for which Automagic is the default app. My attempts to trick it via a browser produced no results.

Tag type I used was "Automagic tag ID (Recommended)"

The text Automagic wrote to the tag is "http://automagic4android.com/automagic_ ... r?id=AM_01"

The Automagic log does not show my flow is executed. I deleted all defaults for all browsers and turned off Android Beam and S Beam. Behavior unchanged.

I created a flow with a trigger and an action. The trigger is an NFC trigger. I used the app to write an Automagic tag onto an NFC tag. App reported success. Action plays a sound. I noticed just now when I was looking at the online documentation pages that my phone browser offered to make the page "mobile friendly" for me. When I clicked it showed me a simpler version of the page but with a white background and black text. I did not try to print. YMMV.
