I've never used nfc before, but now with Automagic this feature becomes very interesting...
My goal is to have the phone unlocked (bluetooth on, etc.) when it's in my car cradle (with an nfc tag applied to it).
The flow works fine but I've had a bad surprise when I tried it in the car.... NFC tag works only with screen turned on and phone unlocked! This has become useless because I need to turn on the screen and unlock the phone just to have the same actions done for me automatically...

I wish to know if it is a device specific behaviour or not. If nfc works this way, I can't see very useful "macros" with nfc in general

Unfortunately this is the default behavior of NFC on Android. The official ROMs don't have a setting to change this behavior.
There are some ROM modifications/Xposed modules available to make NFC also work when the screen is off:
