Is there a way to keep the screen from coming on? If a phone call or text message comes, is there an action that would prevent the screen from turning on?

Short answer: no.

Long answer: For calls, you can use the trigger incoming call and action lock device. For text messages there's plenty of possibilities. Depending on ROM and messaging app you use, you might be able set the phone not to wake up when you receive a message from either one's settings. Most messaging apps I've tried had that option. If that's not possible, you can automagic with trigger notification displayed (set it to detect notifications from your messaging app) and same action as for calls.

While automagic doesn't provide methods to PREVENT screen turning on, it offers a few ways to circumvent this, which should work quite as well.

You may make a flow with a trigger "incoming call" and the action "lock device".
