Comparing Location Provider settings and phone GPS settings

Hi Martin,

I've been doing some searching and reading posts in the AM forums, but I'm still having trouble understanding the relationship between location settings on my phone (Galaxy S III running KitKat 4.4.2) and the Location Provider settings for the trigger Periodic Location Update. Do the the trigger settings work independently from the Android location settings? In other words, does the trigger call the appropriate location provider regardless of how the GPS is set up in the phone's location services?

I haven't done enough testing to get a sense of accuracy compared with battery usage, but ideally I would like to be able to set the GPS preference on the phone to Power Savings and use the AM High Accuracy (Experimental) location provider to get the most accurate results with the least amount of battery usage.

Thanks in advanced for any explanation you can provide.

Hi

The device settings have higher priority, so that an app can not use GPS when GPS is disabled in the preferences of Android. You would have to toggle GPS setting from within Automagic to temporarily allow a more accurate location.
To my knowledge Google never provided any documentation that describes exactly how the new algorithms (the experimental ones) internally work so the accuracy of the provided location might also depend on Google play services version and device.

Regards,
Martin
