From a complete power-off situation is there any means to power on except the power button? Was thinking for example, could closure of ear phone contacts (rather than button depression) turn on the smarthphone if it was so programmed?

No, is not possible, by the way this is the wrong area to ask things. Power button do an hardware action to power on the device.
