Sending a SMS and Android's SMS apps

I have a flow that sends a SMS and then opens Google's Messenger app so I can manually see if it's actually been sent and then received.
When the Messenger app opens it says the message could not be sent and tap to resend. Actually it *has* been sent as the receiving phone gets it! If a put in a delay of 10s or so before I open Messenger it indeed shows the SMS was sent as it should (there's no indication that it couldn't be sent).
It's as if the method being used by Automagic confuses Messenger if Messenger (or Google's older SMS app) is opened too soon. I think the 'unable to send' message usually appears only if GSM signal strength is very poor.
Can this (bad SMS indication in Messenger without delaying opening it) problem be avoided?
Martin accepted a request to implement SMS receipt detection for a future release at some point, which he's already said is on the list, but meanwhile some kind of work around would be great...
