Round & round I go :-)

Hi Guys,
My name is Shane, & I have a problem, (no not that sort!!) I have come across this super little program today, but for the life of me I am just going round in circles & I need help
Basically, there is a program called Cameralert which I want to run on an old rooted HTC One X in my car I have kicking around for a speed camera warning system. It is only going to be used for this, so my idea is I need:
Turn ignition on - phone display comes alive
Cameralert starts
Now I have this stage no problem, but I have an issue, in that when I then turn the ignition, the feed drops off, then when the car is running it's back, so this seems to be confusing things.
I also want to turn cameralert off when I turn the car off, then set the display to go to sleep.
I have had a look through a few posts & tried to do the control ui but tbh, it's a bit above my pay grade as to what I need to do. Am I asking too much?? Is there any kind soul out there who can give me some pointers. i normally do try to muddle through things but after 7 or 8 hours I am officially asking for help lol
