Sometimes when i switch from mobile to wifi while the phonescreen is off. A signal only gets through as soon as i turn on the screen.
Could it be that there is some sleep event at place?

Maybe the setting keep wifi during sleep is off? Try to see at the wifi advanced setting.

Already checked that one. It's just on. But i expect wifi being able to make a connection when just have switched from mobile.
Maybe it has something to do with Nexus 5X itself. I think i'll look that up later.

Try to add a condition to check whether the wifi is connected immediately after you switch to wifi. Log this into a variable whether it is connected or not. It is possible that the phone supress the network change until the next screen on. In that case, you might need to add additional action turn screen on after the switch.

Apparently it is not Nexus 5X related. It does make WiFi connection.
It just does not ping the router.

It appears that still the VPN remains a villain factor. It has trouble creating the private secure tunnel while accessing the local network.
Thanks Desmanto, i know what to do know :)
