Status bar notification issues

Post by elektroinside » 03 Mar 2019 11:50

So, I cleaned up my notification channels, kept only one, reconfigured all my status bar notifications to use that one channel. But now, for some unknown reason, no status bar notification triggers any sound or vibration, if these options are checked.

Everything seems to be in order in all channel settings of AM, including my own custom channel. It should have permissions for everything. I disabled them and re-enabled all of them in Android settings, literally everything. Verified that my notification sound is fine in Android settings. Rebooted the phone, cleared cache etc.

Still no sound/vibration/flash led for status bar notifications.
Tried other apps too, like the messaging app, that plays the notification sound and also vibrates.

My phone: Android v9 - Pocophone F1 with MIUI 10.2

Any ideas?

Thank you.

Update: clearing the channel name (letting AM create a new one) restores the functionality (sound and vibrate). But i would like to re-use an existing channel :-)

I just realize it. Mine also doesn't have sound now. I remember yesterday it still gives sound. But after that, I have tinkered around the notification channel. But forgot what I have changed that make the sound disappear. Toggling the notification channel back to make sound and pop up, still no sound.

1. I deleted my custom channel, but left the string (channel name) in place in the status bar notification settings. It recreated the channel, permissions did not change in Android, but still no sound.
2. Deleted the channel, deleted the string, AM created a new channel that never existed before, ticked all permissions in Android and the sound was back.

I just try again with new notification on statusbar, it has sound. My other flow also still give sound several hours ago. I still don't understand properly how the notification channel works in oreo above. Have to make a deep research again some time later.

Well.. one thing's for sure, selecting an existing channel will not sound or vibrate, at least not on my Chinese brick..

I was experimenting with notifications in the lastest update of Automagic and seems like now with the use of notifications channels, at least on my device running LOS 15.1 with Android 8.1, most of the settings available in Notification on Statusbar are somewhat voided.

In order to set a notification's settings, I need to set a specific channel for each one (or let Automagic do it with the name of the action) and go through the system into AM's notification settings, inside the channel I chose to set, if I want that notification to make sound, vibrate, pop on screen, etc.
Something I noticed is that Automagic tries to set the channel's config the first time you run the action as of the settings you set up in it, but after the first time, it seems unable to change it until you delete the channel or assign it a new one. I need to make clear that it tries, because for example, something I used to do that was setting a low priority (so it's more to the bottom of all notifications) but still enabled the option Plays sound when it's executed, is no longer possible to do, as low priority in channels comes fixed in the system with no audio or vibration option to activate. Though I have to say I didn't experiment much with the previous version after installing my actual ROM, so I'm not completely sure if this was already limited by the newer Android version (before I was running MIUI 9 with Android 7), but still think it's a bug to be solved, and if possible, maybe disable channels if you don't want to use them, or make some workaround that brings more control back as it used to be before.

Notifications are a mess by default on Pocophone, it's not just AM channels that are behaving weirdly. But for anything else, there are workarounds, I mean for the same channel, for other apps.
All my status bar notifications are high priority, for me at least, and are configured as such in AM. I'm also using groups, as i want to separate them (each category has its own group). For anything else, i just use toast notifications.

So i'm unsure if this is related to priorities. Could be that they are not actually set as such by AM in some cases, like reusing them?

Just read AM's documentation if there's something mentioned about this (which I should have read beforehand), and it sure does. Everything I described before is shortly resumed in the documentation  . Anyway, it seems it is an Android limitation, so that's why it recommends that if you want to change a notification's settings from Android 8.0+ you have to use action Modify Notification Channel. And also mentions the first time the channel is created it's based on some of the configs set in AM, but not all of them.

After reading that, I still wanted to disable notification channels, as they seem limiting to me. So I looked into the Android website and there it was said that notifications that don't have any channel in 8.0+, they will not be shown. So looks like unless Android improves these settings in future versions, I'm stuck with workarounds such as setting a notification with the priority I want while vibration and sound will have to be made seperately with AM in other actions.

Oh, great, so we have some info, thank you! I'll read them as well, as on my phone, generally notifications behave strangely and might not be something Android specific in general. Maybe it's the Xiaomi rom messing with them. I'll report back if i find something noticable.

Yep, you were right. Modifying the channel using the action worked, apparently. Now, whatever the settings set for that status bar notification AND selecting the notification channel I previously modified using the action, it will behave as set by the action.
For example, if i modified the channel using the action to sound and vibrate, if i choose that notification channel for a status bar notification AND i select ONLY vibrate, it will also sound.
What a mess..
