no Phone cell GSM change detected in standby mode.

Post by kadkam » 12 Feb 2014 09:06

Hi

I created a flow that change some condition if phone is position on specific GSM cell.
If the phone is idle, not detect the cell change.

Hi,

Unfortunately many devices don't send cell changes to Automagic when the display is turned off to save battery. There are different workarounds available in the trigger Phone Cell GSM in section Options.
Turning the screen on periodically should work on most devices but this will consume battery.

Regards,
Martin

GPS can also determine your location when the screen is off on most devices. GPS usually uses much more battery and mostly works outdoors only.
You could use a regular trigger Location or a trigger Periodic Location Update with the network setting to determine your location. The network setting usually works quite well and does not consume as much battery as GPS.

The location provider Network available in trigger Periodic Location Update uses WiFi (when enabled) and otherwise uses cell masts.
You can also use one of the experimental location providers like Balanced Power/Accuracy to determine your location which should return more accurate results and use less power.

Yes, network can only use the cell masts in this case (when Wifi scanning always available is turned off in the settings of Android 4.4).
Google does not reveal how Balanced Power/Accuracy exactly works so I can not give you a good description of this function. Maybe Google can even access features of the phone that are not available to third-party apps like Automagic.

only for close the discussion;

If I use Network or Balanced Power/Accuracy and set gps and wifi OFF , Automagic can't detect position in standby mode?

It probably depends on device and Android version. It's Google that actually detects the location and tells Automagic when you use a location trigger. Google does not reveal how they internally detect the location and if they can access the cell information of the phone more reliably in stand by mode than third party apps (but I guess they can).
