Re: ControlUI to control GPS?
Thanks for your answer, wibbly! I will have to test my battery drain again, since my impression on my phone has been that it does drain the battery. That might be a way to go then, although I have to overcome my dislike for all apps asking for it, seeing where I am all the time, which they do if I have GPS enabled all the time.
Best regards,

What about your data plan though? It says the following beneath "place" that is GPS..."Location History and Location Reporting data may be used by any Google app or service, including in ads on and off Google. Location Reporting is a per-device setting and CAN POTENTIALLY USE A LOT OF DATA." google says it can't tell you how often google and different apps ask for data. That is a problem I would think, no ? But I guess maybe you have only place ticked, but location reporting off?

I have Google Location Reporting and History both switched off (doesn't benefit me - things like navigation still work, and things like Google Now can't notify me of things based on my location well). These two serttings are different from the setting for forcing GPS off. And I have the benefit of an unlimited data plan, so it's its only the power hit of using a lot of data that worries me. Your mileage may vary.
I suspect if you leave those location settings on, the data consumption will be similar if GPS is forced off or not. Only difference will be the accuracy of the location reported or logged to Google or other apps. Android these days simply reports the best location it can get. If it can't get GPS I believe it uses location based on cell location or wifi (if you allow that)...
