What I need is to be able to query the count. I already can trigger on a SMS received but I need to know it is there are pending messages that have not been looked at yet. I want to take different actions based on whether there are pending unread messages. Even if I track them as they arrive it doesn't tell me if they have been read.

Me, too! Better than a sms count would be a condition to check if certain notifications (of a specific package) still exist. The trigger of a new notification is only the start for what I want to do (when on work, I often don't hear my phone and don't recognize incoming messages (sms, whatsup etc.). So I will send me an email(cause on work my pc gets more attention than my phone) if the message was not read after 5 minutes after receiving it (notification is still there)).

PS: With Tasker I could do that at least for sms and incoming calls
